What is a Crime?

What is a crime? The REAL answer is: ANYTHING that a government or a court decides it is! There is no inherent thing called a “crime.” In one jurisdiction something may be a “crime,” while in another it is not. So, it’s interesting to note that Italy’s highest court just ruled that when small amounts of food are taken in desperate need, it is not a crime. If we stop looking at the act, and using punishment to stop it, we can begin to look with eyes that do not judge, but seek to understand. Certainly this is only a distant possibility now. But, as we begin to understand OURSELVES and our MOTIVATIONS with compassion, we can extend that gift to others. And what we may discover is that we are ALL buddhas, just pretending not to be! Love…

What People Affect You?

The more people in your life that affect what you do and how you do it, the more comparison, fear, worry, anxiety and pain you will feel. It’s that simple. So take a moment and write down who they are. And don’t forget all the people who are tangentially in your life and how THEY affect what you do! That includes your neighbors, your children’s friends and their parents, your fellow employees, etc.. You may be surprised at the sheer number of people involved. Doesn’t it feel like time to explore this phenomenon? Stay tuned! Love…

Savor Each Moment…

It is so easy to forget that we’ve only got a short stay here on earth and that each moment has amazing potential – which we’ve seen by those moments that DID! The bliss of life lies in the gift of remembering this, and savoring each precious situation, each precious experience, each precious ‘tick’ of life coming and going, moment to moment. When it is forgotten, life is flat or painful – often something to be avoided or diverted from. When it is remembered, then whatever is given by life becomes a gift, a foundation for new understandings about ourselves and our world. It is NEVER to late to learn from THIS moment!!! Love…

Having a Different Perspective

It is almost impossible to look at things from a different perspective unless we are looking independent of the mind, rather than THROUGH it! The limitations that the mind places on reality drive us to certain conclusions, repeatedly. That is why it is essential to first invite a stronger connection with our body, so that we are not living so much from the mind. Then it becomes possible to experience some silence and stillness, where significant understandings arise, and where it’s possible to SEE things differently! The best invitation I know is…meditation. And then we can bring what is learned into our daily life. Love…

On the Road to Maturity…

Before we can reach our full maturity, we have to awaken the youthful spirit within us that has been lying almost dormant for far too long! Once we breathe life into our sleeping adolescence, and gain the spunk that it contains, we can then move on to a deeper, richer part of ourselves that is immersed in the wisdom of the silence and stillness that existence offers. Are We Projecting on the World?

Goethe gives us one possibility of what the world looks like. He said, “A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.”

If it is seen through the heart, it is heaven. But the other possibility is there of seeing existence through the mind, which is loaded with all sorts of negative perceptions. Then it is hell. Just look around and see which possibility has been chosen – unconsciously – up till now. Not that we haven’t had tastes of heaven. But overwhelmingly, our time on this earth has been taken up seeing the world through competition and comparison, possessiveness and greed, judgment, worry, fear, and pain. It is time to begin the journey to the heart, which is patiently waiting for us. Love…

The Mind is a Story-Producing Machine!

Whenever possible, it is so helpful to get in touch with the fact that the mind is producing a STORY around whatever is happening OUT THERE! Keep watching the mind, and you will soon notice that EVERYTHING that is happening has a story imposed around it.
Take your mind ‘out for a walk,’ with the intention of just watching what the mind does as you walk. You will most likely notice how it LOVES to create stories and judgments about EVERYTHING that it sees and hears. Just being in touch with this helps break the story-induced unconsciousness that the mind creates. And for a flash, there is life JUST AS IT IS! Ahhhhhh! Love…

The Value of Comparison…

Notice how the mind is always creating comparisons! And they are created to support some negative inference: if one is smarter, better, more attractive, more desirable, more valuable, more worthy, more lovable, more significant, etc., then the other is (negatively) less so!
The ‘grass is greener’ adage gives rise to the understanding that the relativity of comparison – sooner or later – makes comparison at best irrelevant, and at worst, a source of pain and misery.
Have a unique, incomparable day! Love…

Inner Harmony will be Reflected in Our Outer Actions

Many of us have been so conditioned to believe that how we look and act on the outside is more important than how we feel on the inside. This is turning life upside down! Maintaining an outer facade will NOT create an inner well-being. But an inner harmony WILL be REFLECTED in the outer actions.
The only way for change to happen is for each of us to honestly explore and challenge any ‘understanding’ we have that the outer has more value than the inner. Once the tension and pain of this convolution is experienced, that ‘understanding’ will be seen as a misunderstanding, and change will be just waiting to happen. We can’t live forever in trying to gain others’ approval and acceptance, without killing the spirit within. Love…
